EASL’s Matt Beyer sees “win-win” situation with PBA in home-and-away tournament

East Asia Super League Chief Executive Officer Matt Beyer sees a “win-win” situation both for the EASL and the Philippine Basketball Association following its video conference meeting with PBA chairman Ricky Vargas on Dec. 3.

Beyer believes the Asian region is a perfect playground for the PBA’s own unique and dynamic style of play to be exposed as he continues to lay the groundwork for the inaugural staging of the East Asia Super League home-and-away tournament slated in October 2021.

“We look forward to exposing the region to the dynamic and upbeat style of basketball PBA teams are legendary for. We live in exciting times!” Beyer told ESPN5 on Tuesday.

The American executive made the formal presentation last week via Zoom, along with Blackwater team owner and concurrent EASL Philippine business development chief Dioceldo Sy.

Beyer sounded upbeat after coming out of that virtual meeting with the EASL, which on Monday (Dec. 7) already submitted its formal proposal to the PBA.

“We are hoping to enter into a long-term deal as quickly as possible, and we look forward to bringing top teams from around Asia to PBA fans in the Philippines and on their own screens when PBA teams play in Greater China, Japan and Korea,” stressed Beyer.

The PBA is no stranger anymore to the EASL, having sent three ballclubs during last year’s Terrific 12 in Macau namely five-time All-Filipino Cup champion San Miguel Beer, TNT and Blackwater.

Beyer explained the home-and-away league will last for five months when it kicks off sometime in October 2021. The champion and runner-up of each pro ballclub from China, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines will comprise the initial eight-member squad for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 editions.

The group stage will then have two groups of four squads, with each team playing a total of six home-and-away games from October 2021 to January 2022. The top two teams from each group then advance to the Final Four in February 2022.
